...besides Bonus Dollars?
- Our seeds and soil are coming in...
- We are making equipment repairs and upgrades...
- We have a full time farmer - who has a long list of chores and plans in process (not to mention removing heavy snows from our structures!)...
- 5 members of our 2025 Farm Team attended the NOFA Conference this past weekend and they are lining up our best season yet!
Most of you know this, yet it is worth the review. Why is organic food more expensive? At our Common Roots Farm at South Village and Hubbard Park we:
- Do not use pesticides or herbicides! This makes pest management and weed control more labor intensive but is better for the health of our customers and soils.
-Â are GMO free.
-Â Only use organic approved natural fertilizers which are more expensive than conventional synthetic fertilizers.
- Cover crop throughout the spring, summer, fall, and winter to build the nutrient density of our soils, reduce erosion, break pest cycles, suppress weeds, and decrease runoff.
- have a 7 year crop rotation to make sure we do not deplete our soils.
Top Secret of our double Organic Certification!
- We cultivate food on 10 acres where there are no chemicals within 280 acres, this is rare on small urban farms: Farm at South Village is 220 acres with zero chemicals allowed, Hubbard Park is 60 acres with zero chemicals allowed.
-Bottom line is our Common Roots farms produce the cleanest food in town grown on nutrient-rich soils.
